Algorithms can shift how people think, vote, and buy, often without those people ever knowing they've been nudged. That's not a talking point; it's measured, replicated research, and it's the subject of the latest episode of the Creative Entrepreneur podcast, where Julie Lokun and Jen Fontanilla sit down with Dr. Robert Epstein to unpack how it works and what it means for anyone building a business online.
Who Is Dr. Robert Epstein?
Dr. Epstein isn't a pundit with a hot take on Big Tech. He's a Harvard-trained psychologist, the last PhD student to study directly under B.F. Skinner, and a former editor-in-chief of Psychology Today. He's written 15 books and over 250 articles, and his research has gone as far as testimony before the U.S. Senate.
That research centers on the Search Engine Manipulation Effect, or SEME, which is at the heart of this episode.
What Is the Search Engine Manipulation Effect?

In plain terms, SEME describes how the order and framing of search results can shift a person's opinions and decisions, often on subjects as consequential as who they vote for. Dr. Epstein's studies, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, found the effect is real, repeatable, and works best when the person being influenced has no idea it's happening.
As Dr. Epstein puts it: "The scariest manipulation is the one you never see happening."
That line reframes "the algorithm" from a vague, shrug-worthy mystery into something concrete: a system with real mechanics, built by real companies, with real incentives that have nothing to do with your business's best interests.
Why This Matters for Your Brand

The conversation connects that research directly to a question every creative entrepreneur has to answer: are you building your business on land you own, or land you're renting from a platform that can change the rules at any moment?
If your audience exists only within a platform's ecosystem, that platform decides who sees you, when, and why. Change the algorithm, and your reach can disappear overnight, with no warning and no appeal. As Dr. Epstein says on the episode: "If you don't own your ecosystem, someone else owns your audience."
That phrase, "Own Your Ecosystem," is the antidote the conversation lands on, and it's a direct extension of something we talk about constantly at Cre8tive Con: own your business, don't rent it. Whether it's your platform, your audience, or your algorithmic visibility, the principle is the same: if you don't control it, you don't actually have it.
What You Can Actually Do About It

Dr. Epstein doesn't leave listeners stuck in doom-scrolling dread. He offers concrete advice for creators who feel powerless against Big Tech, practical ways to reduce dependence on any single platform, and ways to build direct relationships with an audience that no algorithm update can quietly erase. The conversation also takes a rapid-fire turn into AI and free will, exploring what entrepreneurs should watch for as these systems grow more sophisticated.
